大真面目ではあるが、ちょっと風変わりなユーモアあふれる世界的研究に送られるイグ・ノーベル賞。本家ノーベル賞の脇で、日本人の3年連続受賞が報じられた。今年の生物学賞の栄誉に輝いたのは、パンダの糞を集めた男、田口文章北里大学名誉教授（７２）であった。
彼の受賞理由は、パンダのふんから分離した菌で生ごみの90％以上の減量に成功した研究成果にある。上野動物園でパンダの糞をもらって研究を進め、分解能力の高い細菌を発見したのである。この細菌を利用することで、家庭用生ごみの95％以上を水と二酸化炭素に分解したのである。この結果は、地球環境にやさしいゴミ削減策にもつながるものであり、実用化へ向けた研究を継続中だということである。
